
Tony Mallam
Having qualified as a CA with Arthur Andersen, Tony joined SABC where he spent six years working in radio, advertising and general management. Tony moved on to take the position of FD with Alexander Forbes, then left to successfully tender for KFM Radio in Cape Town with a consortium that included Ethos Private Equity. The station was sold in 2000 to NAIL media; at which point Tony began to invest in a number of start-ups, one notable success being Clickatell. For the next year, Tony consulted extensively to entrepreneurs and eventually met up with the other CVP partners. Tony has a passion for early stage TMT enterprise, and although he is a financial specialist by training, his all-round knowledge covers strategy, marketing, sales and systems.
David Murray
Before joining CVP, David was employed by Dimension Data for 3 years, firstly as Managing Director of SPL Cape, Dimension Data’s software division, and latterly as MD of Automate, an automotive software business with 70 % market share in the automotive retail sector in South Africa. Prior to that, David was a Principal with Gemini Consulting for 7 years, working closely with a range of blue chip clients such as South African Breweries, African Explosives, Mondi, Siemens and Dow Chemicals. David rose to become head of the Operations discipline for Gemini South Africa, which included the Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, and Logistics divisions. Prior to Gemini, David was employed by Anglo American Corporation for 5 years as a Senior Geologist, following his receipt of an Anglo American scholarship which paid for his university tuition. David holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town, where he is still actively involved as an external examiner and mentor on a number of programmes. Additionally, David is member of Endeavor’s venture corps, is on the judging panel for TT100 and is a committee member of the SAVCA Cape Town committee. David also owns and runs a successful e-commerce venture which has become one of the leading antique silver online stores globally.
Martin Wright
Martin joined the CVP team after having spent 15 years in the USA. While in the States Martin cofounded and was CEO of Emerald Solutions, a 750 person IT services firm specializing in developing large scale internet applications for Fortune 500 companies such as Nike, Intel, AT&T and others. At Emerald, Martin had the experience of raising approximately $40 million in venture capital from major VC’s such as Technology Crossover Ventures. Emerald was taken through the process of becoming a public company before the dot.com implosion and the company was subsequently sold to SBI. Prior to Emerald, Martin was a Vice President of Claremont Technology Group which was one of the first successful public offerings of a mid-sized IT services firm on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Martin has been involved in the rapid organic growth of Emerald and Claremont as well as the evaluation and acquisition of a number of high technology businesses.
Geoff Hainebach
Having retired as joint MD of Siemens Ltd / CEO of Siemens Telecoms in South Africa, Geoff currently holds a number of positions within high-profile local TMT companies alongside his role within CVP; Geoff was founding Chairman of Clickatell, is chairman of Grand Battery Technologies, and a Director of Psitek and Elmer Communications. In an accomplished career, Geoff has served as an ICT advisor to the South African Minister of Trade and Industry, was president of the Electronic Industries Federation of South Africa, a board member of UNISA’s School of Business Leadership as well as a member of the faculty advisory committees of the University of Stellenbosch and University of Pretoria Engineering faculties. Geoff was also the first Chairman of the Cape IT Initiative and its subsidiary Bandwidth Barn. Geoff brings a wealth of knowledge, strategic insight and an unsurpassed contact network to each of CVP’s engagements.
Daniel Leech
Daniel joined CVP in 2008 as an investment analyst, bringing his strong analytical and reserch skills to support CVP's investment transactions. Daniel started his career as a strategy consultant with Accenture and later joined MAC Consulting and Hollard. As a consultant, Daniel advised leading businesses in the UK, Australia and South Africa including Sainsbury’s, Edcon, Anglo American, Gold Fields and SASOL. Daniel holds a Business Science degree from UCT and is currently a CFA level III candidate.
Tony Chang
Prior to joining CVP, Tony was a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine at the University of Cape Town. Tony received his Ph.D. in medical biochemistry in December 2009. During his Ph.D. study, Tony developed a keen interest to apply his analytical skills to the business world. In October 2009, Tony joined CVP as an analyst with the aim of gaining exposure and experience in the business advisory field.
Mauritz Venter
Before joining CVP, Mauritz conducted genetic research at Stellenbosch University, where he completed two postdoctoral fellowships (in plant biotechnology and human genetics respectively) and worked as a contract researcher and project leader. Mauritz is co-founder of a biotech start-up venture, AzarGen Biotechnologies, focusing on the production of human recombinant proteins in plants. Mauritz holds a PhD in biotechnology and has published articles in plant and human/medical genetics.
