Kazang (formerly Psitek/Elprom+Saicom)

Sold to Paycorp in July 2014

Today’s Kazang was formed by the March 2011 merger of Saicom with Psitek’s mobile vending division, Kazang. The combined decades-long experience, systems, infrastructure and industry relations create a solid base for ongoing success in the South African and African markets.

Saicom Payphones

Saicom Payphones are powered by Kazang. As well as earning generous commissions from selling airtime and electricity, you can earn additional income from a Saicom payphone, powered by Kazang.

Local calls cost 90 cents, and international calls are only R2.90 (worldwide, except Zimbabwe) beating many of the best cellphone special offers today. You earn commission on every call, for instance, you only pay 70 cents for local calls.

A Saicom payphone is easy to use, mobile, can be recharged with funds 24/7, a full battery lasts an entire day, and it runs off the Vodacom network. It is suitable for indoors or outdoors and comes backed by a Vodacom warranty. It can send and receive calls and SMSs, and can be used for prepaid vending.

About Kazang Prepaid

Kazang Prepaid is one of Africa’s leading micro-payment processing services. It offers the ability to pre-pay for essential products and serves to people who are typically underserved – usually in rural or peri-urban areas. What’s more, Kazang gives business owners, shopkeepers and other entrepreneurs in these areas the opportunity to supplement their income and grow customer loyalty by becoming a Kazang dealer and earning commission on each sale.

Payments are taken using Kazang Prepaid’s proprietary mobile terminals, which are designed and built to withstand a more informal business environment – for instance they don’t need a steady electricity supply and work off the GPRS mobile data service, so don’t need a fixed data connection. As well as the terminals, sales can be made via the web, USSD and mobile web. All these sales front-ends interface with Kazang Content Ready, a sophisticated switching service that handles thousands of micro-payments every minute.

As well as services such as airtime, electricity and mobile data, Kazang Prepaid vendors can sell financial services such as funeral policies or life insurance; handle money transfers; sell lifestyle services such as TopTV pre-paid subscriptions, ringtones, wall papers, music and so on. Indeed, the Kazang service has also been used for lead generation and advertising at the base of the pyramid.

Over the past decade, Kazang Prepaid has handled more than 300 million transactions, comprising several billion Rands of products and services, in South Africa alone. It, and Saicom Payphones, has created in excess of 30,000 jobs in typically less prosperous communities.

Kazang Prepaid services are currently being used under licence in seven African countries as well as South Africa: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Additional countries are set to launch in 2013.
